Name: Sarah Woodford
Job Title: General Practitioner

My background is a NHS doctor. I started out working for 3 years in psychiatry moving to become a Public health specialist registrar in the North West. I trained as a GP and became a Partner in May 2006 for 10 years. Whilst in this role I also held a strategic role of Adult Safeguarding lead for NHS Cumbria, working within a multidisciplinary environment. I chose to leave my partnership to take up a more varied portfolio of work.  I now am a specialist adviser for the CQC, I conduct GP appraisals and investigate complaints for NHS England. I work for the RCGP practice support programme where I support practices with challenges and offer one to one coaching. I trained as a coach with Novum gaining my foundation certificate in December 2016. I have just completed the Coaching for Inclusion programme with the NHS Leadership Academy. I am part of the North West Coaching and Mentoring network. I continue to work as a GP locum and appreciate how hard front line primary care is.

My approach to coaching

My key skills are listening, curiosity, challenge and quickly building rapport. I bring an understanding of individual change, drivers and resistance for change – through my clinical work I understand unconscious processes and offer that reflection to help bring a deeper understanding. I offer a supportive space to clarify goals, consider career changes, create insights and facilitate commitment to achieve improvements in performance and wellbeing.

Experience of coaching

Coaching questions and techniques are fundamental to many aspects of my work. I use motivational interviewing techniques to help patients with chronic diseases. I use coaching questions within appraisals to generate personal development plans. I use coaching techniques to facilitate personal solutions to problems within the RCGP practices I support. I attend a number of CPD updates within the North West Leadership academy and the EMCC.
